Streaming a File to a Local Zixi Feeder or Broadcaster
VLC can be used to stream an encapsulated MPEG Video file from a local disk to the Zixi transport platform. In order to stream a local file to a local Zixi Feeder, you must create an Input stream on the Zixi Feeder and then configure VLC Player to accept this stream.
To create an Input Stream on Zixi Feeder running on the local host:
- Access the local Zixi Feeder's management console through a web browser by entering the following URL: 127.0.0.1:4200
- In the Main Navigation bar, click Inputs.
- Click the New Input button.
- In the Input Name field, enter a name for the input.
- In the Input Source field, select UDP.
- In the NIC field, select 127.0.0.1 (local host).
- In the Port field, enter a non-conflicting network port.
- Click OK. A new UDP input stream is created.
To configure VLC Player:
Open VLC Player
On the Main Menu, click Media. Sub-menu options are displayed.
Click Stream. The Open Media screen opens.
Under the File tab, click the Add button and select the file you wish to stream.
Select the "Show more options" checkbox at the bottom.
Click the Stream button. The Stream Output wizard opens
Click Next.
In the New Destination drop down list, select UDP (legacy).
Click Add The UDP tab is added:
In the Address field, enter 127.0.0.1 (local host).
In the Port field, enter the port number matching the Zixi Feeder input port
Click Next.
In the Profile drop-down list, select Video – H.264 + MP3 (TS).
If needed, you can further edit the codec parameters with the ‘Edit Selected Profile’ button.
Click Next.
Ensure the Stream all elementary streams checkbox is selected.
Click Stream. The VLC player begins streaming.
Simultaneously you should see the stream connect and show positive bitrate in the Zixi Feeder Inputs list:
To play a UDP stream to a networked Feeder, replace the 127.0.0.1 output IP address with the IP or resolvable name of your target Feeder or Broadcaster.
