Configuring a transcode profile in ZEN Master
6 min
A transcode profile is a reusable set of encoding settings (codec, resolution, bitrate, audio). You create it once, then apply it to any transcoded source or channel. Changing a profile later affects every source that uses it.
Before you start
- You need a ZEN Master user with permission to manage transcoding profiles.
- Know your target output: codec, resolution, frame rate and bitrate.
- Transcoding needs a Broadcaster with transcoding enabled in its license.
Create a profile
- Log in to ZEN Master.
- In the left menu, go to Transformation > Transcoding Profiles.
- Click Add (or New Profile).
- Enter a Name that describes the output, for example 1080p30-h264-6M. The name is how you will find the profile when you build a source.
Video
- Leave Transcode Video on to re-encode, or turn it off to pass the original video through.
- Choose the Video Codec: H.264 or H.265.
- Choose the Encoding Profile. For H.264 this is Baseline, Main, High or High 10. Use High unless a downstream device needs something simpler.
- Set the Resolution (width and height) and Frame Rate. Keep the source aspect ratio unless you need to change it.
- Set the Bitrate. Choose CBR for a steady rate, or VBR with an average and a maximum.
- Set the GOP (keyframe interval). A common choice is one keyframe every 1 to 2 seconds, for example 60 at 30 fps. Use closed GOP if the output feeds HLS or DASH packaging.
Audio
- Leave Transcode Audio on to re-encode, or turn it off to pass the original audio through.
- Choose the Audio Codec (for example AAC), Bitrate and Sample Rate.
Optional
- To burn in a logo, enable Logo Insertion, upload the image and set its position, size and transparency.
- Click Save.
Use the profile
- Go to Sources and create or edit a source.
- Set the source type to Transcoded.
- Choose the input (parent) source and select your profile in Transcoding Profile.
- Save, then add the source to a channel or target as normal.
Check it works
Open the new source and confirm it is Running. In the stream details, check that the output codec, resolution and bitrate match the profile.
Tips
- Build one profile per rendition (for example 1080p, 720p, 480p) and reuse them across channels.
- A profile that is in use cannot be deleted. Remove it from the sources first.
- Editing a profile restarts the transcode on every source using it. Make changes during a quiet period.
- Hardware acceleration (GPU) needs a Broadcaster with a supported GPU. If you are unsure, leave it off.
API
You can also manage profiles with the ZEN Master API (/transcoding_profiles). See the ZEN Master API reference on the Zixi Customer Portal under Downloads.
